HA DPG webinar: Clearing the Confusion: Supporting Activity with Nutrient-Rich Carbohydrates

Active older adults are not immune to media messages that carbs are bad and should be avoided. Couple that with the rise in the interest of high fat diets for sports performance and it isn’t surprising that older adults are questioning the value of carbohydrate in their daily diets. We know that that healthy aging is powered by good nutrition and exercise, but older adults have many definitions for what is “good” nutrition. This webinar will present evidence-based recommendations for carbohydrate intake for active, older adults and discuss carbohydrate availability to fuel activity. We will review research on the benefits of various carbohydrate-rich foods, including fruit, vegetables, grains to provided needed nutrients and fiber in the diets of active, older adults. Popular trends, such a gluten-free diets, will also be addressed. Lastly, we will provide meal and snack ideas that will appeal of active, older adults to ensure adequate carbohydrate.

Learning objectives:

  • Describe the role of carbohydrate in fueling working muscles and explain the concept of carbohydrate availability.

  • Identify the current science-based recommendations for how much carbohydrate active older adults should consume each day and provide three practical examples of how older adults can ensure adequate daily intake.

  • Explain the health benefits of carbohydrate-rich foods in the diets of active, older adults and identify nutrient-rich meals and snacks.
