National Nutrition Month - 2015Each year, Healthy Aging DPG offers members the opportunity to share their story regarding National Nutrition Month® promotions.
We're thrilled to highlight Iris Brand this year.
As a Dietitian Consultant, every month I lead a much appreciated Nutrition Support Group for the residents at Cedar Sinai Park, a Retirement and Assisted Living Home in Portland, OR.
To celebrate National Nutrition Month®, I was inspired to do a special activity with the residents.
I designed a creative activity template, revolving around "Color My Plate," based off of "My Plate," and including information from the previous topics in our classes on antioxidant-rich and memory-enhancing foods.
The next step was to create an event promotion for the electronic message boards in the halls of the home and for emails to be send out the residents.
On the day of the class, I set up the art room with all the necessary art tools. When the residents arrived, we discussed the theme of National Nutrition Month®, what their favorite physical activities are, their thoughts are on previous nutrition classes we have had, and what goals they have from this special event. They mentioned that their desires with this event are to further enhance their nutrition knowledge, via the form of art.
®Next, I delivered the lesson on the concepts of "My Plate," "Color my Plate," and then the objectives of our creative activity. Once the residents started working on their projects, they were having a great time creating their plates and drawing little pictures of the types of foods they enjoy in each portion of the plate.
The room was full of laughter and youthfulness, and all around, we had an enjoyable time doing a bit of an unconventional lesson on nutrition, to celebrate National Nutrition Month®.
